Environmental allergy symptoms happen when your immune system reacts to a substance in your environment, most often airborne pollen
Allergies happen when your immune system overreacts to a harmless substance, most often airborne pollen. In Little Rock, the triggers rotate with the calendar. Tree pollen from oak, pine, and cedar dominates the spring, roughly March through May, and it is the culprit behind the yellow dusting on cars. Grass pollen takes over in late spring and summer. Then ragweed drives a second wave from about August through the first frost. Mold spores, common in our humid climate, can flare symptoms year round. Because these seasons overlap, many Little Rock residents feel like the sneezing never fully quits.
Seasonal allergies tend to produce a familiar cluster of symptoms: sneezing, a runny or stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, an itchy throat, postnasal drip, and sometimes a nagging cough or sinus pressure. Many people also feel drained, because congestion disrupts sleep. The symptoms often mirror a cold, which leads to a common question every allergy season.
The clearest clue is time. A cold usually runs its course in a week to ten days, while allergies persist for as long as you are exposed to the trigger, sometimes for weeks. Itchy eyes and an itchy throat point strongly toward allergies, since colds rarely cause itching. A cold may bring body aches or a low fever, but allergies never cause a fever. If your symptoms line up with pollen season and keep returning at the same time each year, allergies are the likely answer.
Most people can tame seasonal allergies with a layered approach. Start by reducing your exposure, then add over-the-counter help as needed.
1. Track the pollen count and plan outdoor activity for lower-count times, often after rain and later in the day.
2. Keep windows closed during peak season and run air conditioning with a clean filter.
3. Rinse pollen away. Shower after being outdoors, and try a saline sinus rinse to clear irritants.
4. Use over-the-counter options such as non-drowsy antihistamines, steroid nasal sprays, and eye drops, which work best when started before the season peaks.
5. Make sure to check with your doctor before starting any over the counter medications to ensure no interactions with prescription medications.
6. Change clothes after yard work and avoid drying laundry outside, where it collects pollen.
Reach out to your primary care team when the drugstore aisle is not enough. It is time for a professional plan if your allergies disrupt sleep or daily life, if over-the-counter medicines stop working, if you have repeated sinus infections, or if allergies worsen asthma or trigger wheezing. Symptoms that drag on, or facial pain and pressure that will not clear, also deserve a closer look. Your provider can confirm whether allergies, a sinus infection, or something else is behind your symptoms, prescribe stronger treatment, and, when a sinus or skull X-ray is warranted, arrange imaging to guide care.
